PLAN YOUR FIRST GARDEN
A well planned task is half complete. Starting a garden does not need sophisticated setup. Here are simple steps to get you started.
- Identify what are you interested in growing.
- Learn your climate and micro climate. It isn't complicated. Type in your Zip Code here. The USDA site has a detailed zone map to understand your hardiness zone.
- Choose a location. Your location could be your windowsill / backyard.
- Observe your chosen location for light. Have you chosen a sunny location? Or if indoors, are you planning a grow light?
- Choose your gardening method. It could be raised bed, in-ground, containers, indoors, outdoors. Anything works. Only what you grow and how you grow varies with your location and preferred method.
- Plan your garden.
- Test your soil. Your local county should have soil testing resources.
- Amend your soil as needed. A homemade compost is a great amend to any soil.
- Source seeds / seedlings. Learn your plants' grow needs.
- Take care of your plants with right nutrition, water and pest control.
- Enjoy your harvest.
